The Principal Automation Engineer is responsible for setting the technical direction of automation platforms for our commercial operations, delivering standard and sustainable automation technology. This role is based in Harbourgate, Portsmouth, on-site, and involves advancing future therapeutics from discovery to delivery. What You Will Do Drive standardization of automation technologies, including global standards for platforms, architectures, and software. Lead automation engineering teams in designing and developing innovative solutions within global projects. Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship, ensuring adherence to industry best practices. Engage with stakeholders to understand value drivers and develop technology roadmaps for transformation. Improve internal processes and solutions using modern engineering tools and practices. Who You Are Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related STEM field, or equivalent. 10+ years of experience in automation hardware and software design and implementation, including life sciences sectors. Expertise with PLC/PAC controllers, HMI/SCADA, DCS systems, and platforms like Siemens, Rockwell, or Inductive Automation. Full lifecycle development experience. Subject matter expert with knowledge of industry trends and emerging automation technologies, preferably in life sciences. Travel Requirements Ability to travel 10-20% of the time. Additional Skills (Preferred but Not Essential) Experience with relational databases (e.g., MS SQL), scripting languages (Python), or high-level languages (C#). Familiarity with modern software development tools like Git and Azure DevOps. Knowledge of IT/OT environments, industrial networking, and virtual machines.
